Spending caps: monthly extra-usage caps and alerts

View as Markdown

A monthly additional usage limit (spending cap) controls how much paid Additional Usage you can use in a calendar month. It's available on individual plans and self-serve team plans, and it's separate from your prepaid credit and your Auto Top-up settings.

Four separate controls

  1. Shared weekly pool: usage included with each paid seat for eligible first-party (Grok) models, shared across supported Grok and Cursor products
  2. Prepaid balance: prepaid credit that third-party models in Cursor draw from first use (at API list prices), and that pays for Additional Usage after the shared weekly pool is used
  3. Monthly additional usage limit: the maximum paid Additional Usage the team can consume during the month
  4. Auto Top-up: off unless you turn it on. When it's on, it adds credit when your balance drops below the threshold you choose. Manual top-ups are separate.

When Additional Usage stops

After a seat uses its shared weekly pool, Additional Usage is paid from the team's prepaid balance. Additional Usage stops when either:

  • The prepaid balance is empty, or
  • The team's monthly extra-usage cap is reached

Adding more money does not raise the monthly extra-usage cap. A team can therefore have money left in its balance and still be blocked from additional extra usage.

Self-serve teams

  • Self-serve teams: admins set one monthly additional usage limit for the whole team, either a fixed amount or an amount per seat.

Alerts

Where available, spend alerts warn you when extra usage reaches a threshold you set. Alerts do not stop usage. To put a hard stop on paid Additional Usage, set a monthly additional usage limit.

Check your current settings to see which alert and delivery options are available.

Where to manage

After you switch, manage prepaid credit, Auto Top-up, and your monthly additional usage limit under Additional usage credits on grok.com/dashboard.
