Prepaid balance and automatic top-ups

What’s a top-up?

Top-ups add prepaid credit to your account. You use it to pay for third-party models in Cursor and for first-party usage beyond what your plan includes. Third-party models in Cursor, like Claude or GPT, aren’t included in your plan. You can still use them in Cursor at API rates, paid from your prepaid credit.

  • Each individual plan or Teams plan paid seat has a weekly included allowance based on its assigned plan for first-party models.
  • When that included allowance isn’t enough, extra usage draws from prepaid credit funded in advance
  • A manual top-up adds prepaid credit when you choose
  • An automatic top-up charges your saved payment method when your available balance drops to a pre-set threshold
  • Third-party models in Cursor, like Claude or GPT, aren’t included in your plan and are billed against your prepaid credit

On The X Subscription, usage beyond your seat’s weekly included allowance is covered with prepaid credit (top-ups), not the older on-demand bill. If you turn on Auto Top-up, it refills that balance when it gets low so your work isn't interrupted.

Setting up top-ups

When completing the unification process or setting up a new subscription on a unified plan, you’ll be prompted to adjust your top-up settings after checkout.

  • Auto Top-up only runs after you turn it on and save it
  • When you turn on Auto Top-up, you choose when to top up and the amount, and you can set a monthly spending cap
  • You can turn Auto Top-up off, or adjust top-up settings, under Additional usage credits on grok.com/dashboard/billing
  • Enterprise accounts: contact your account team.

When you’re charged for top-ups

You’ll be charged when an automatic top-up runs, or whenever you buy credits.

When you use third-party models in Cursor, or use more than your plan includes, that usage draws from your prepaid credit. Automatic top-ups occur when your prepaid credit falls below your set threshold, and only when you have Auto Top-up turned on.

Receipts and invoices

Top-up charges appear on grok.com/dashboard/billing under Billing & invoices › Invoices.

If a charge looks wrong, review grok.com/dashboard/billing first and contact Support at support@x.ai with the following details:

  • the account email
  • the charge amount
  • the date of the charge
  • details regarding the disputed amount

Setting a spending cap

A spending cap limits how much paid extra usage you can use each month.

  • The spending cap counts the paid extra usage you use, not the prepaid credit you add. Adding credit, whether manually or through automatic top-ups, doesn’t count toward it.
  • When you reach your spending cap, paid extra usage pauses until the next month or until you raise the cap, even if money remains in your prepaid credit.
  • Individual plans: Open Billing & invoices at grok.com/dashboard/billing. Under Additional usage credits, find "Monthly additional usage limit" and click Edit to set your spending cap. Leave it unset for no cap.
  • Teams plans: Admins set one spending cap for the whole team, either a fixed amount or an amount per seat.

Turning Auto Top-up off stops new automatic charges. Any prepaid credit you already bought stays available until it’s used or expires.

How to turn Auto Top-up off

  1. Sign in and open Billing & invoices at grok.com/dashboard/billing.
  2. Under Additional usage credits, click your setting next to Auto Top-up.
  3. Turn off Auto Top-up.

On Teams plans, only admins can change automatic top-up settings.

After you turn it off, extra usage stops once your included weekly usage and your prepaid credit are both used up. To keep going, buy credits, upgrade your plan, or wait for your weekly usage to reset.

Where to manage

Everything related to top-ups is in the Additional usage credits section on Billing & invoices at grok.com/dashboard/billing:

  • Your remaining prepaid credit
  • Buy credits: make a one-time top-up
  • Set auto top-up: choose the amount to add and the balance that triggers a top-up
  • Your optional spending cap: click Edit next to the monthly limit

Credit grants

Credit grants are separate from your prepaid credit and may be provided by certain promotions. They appear under Credit grants on Billing & invoices at grok.com/dashboard/billing and are applied automatically to eligible usage across Cursor, Grok, and Grok Bot, depending on the grant. The expiry date for your credit grants is shown here as well.
